Day 24: The Word for All People
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. - Acts 2:1-4, 16-18
Devotional:
On this Christmas Eve, as we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ's birth, it's beautiful to reflect on how that first Christmas message has spread across the world. What began with angels speaking to a small group of shepherds in a field outside Bethlehem has become a global celebration, transcending language, culture, and time itself.
The story of Pentecost shows us God's heart for all people to hear His voice. Just as the shepherds ran to spread the good news of Jesus' birth, the disciples at Pentecost suddenly found themselves empowered to share this same message in ways everyone could understand. It's as if God was saying, "This message is too important to be limited by human barriers."
Pentecost is a stunning reversal of the Tower of Babel story. At Babel, human pride led to confused languages and scattered people. At Pentecost, God's Spirit brings understanding across language barriers and gathers people together. The miracle wasn't just in the speaking of different languages; it was in the hearing - "we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
The Spirit is poured out on "all people" - sons and daughters, young and old, men and women. Just as Jesus' birth brought together shepherds and wise men, common and noble, the message of His love continues to reach every corner of human society. Tonight, as Christmas Eve services begin around the world, this same message will be shared in countless languages, yet telling the same story of God's incredible love.
Notice how the Spirit's empowerment leads immediately to proclamation. Those who receive the Spirit begin to speak. It's as if hearing God's voice naturally leads to sharing it with others. Tomorrow, as we celebrate Christ's birth, we're not just remembering a historical event - we're participating in the ongoing story of God's voice reaching out to all people.

What might the Holy Spirit be empowering you to share with others about the meaning of Christmas?
Prayer Prompt: Ask the Holy Spirit to help you both hear and share the Christmas message in new ways, and for a fresh awareness of how God's voice continues to reach all people with the good news of Jesus.
