Summer on the Mount - Part 5: When No One Is Watching
Big Idea: The faith that forms you most is often the faith no one else sees.
Scripture: Matthew 6:1–18
Supporting: 1 Samuel 16:7; Psalm 139:23–24; Matthew 23:25–28; John 12:42–43; Colossians 3:23–24; Hebrews 4:13
In His teaching on giving, prayer, and fasting, Jesus warns against practicing faith for human approval. He is not condemning visible obedience; He is confronting performative spirituality that cares more about being seen by people than being formed by the Father.
Discussion Questions:
Where do you feel the most pressure to manage how people see you — work, family, church, social media, friendships, or somewhere else — and what does that pressure do to your soul?
Jesus says the Father sees what is done in secret. Does that feel more convicting, comforting, or freeing to you right now? Why?
What is one hidden act of obedience you could practice this week — generosity, prayer, service, forgiveness, repentance, or restraint — that would help train your heart to live for the Father instead of applause?
