Summer on the Mount - Part 4: The Hardest Kind of Love

Big Idea: The way of Jesus is most visible in how we treat difficult people.

Scripture: Matthew 5:38–48

Supporting: Leviticus 19:18; Proverbs 25:21–22; Luke 23:34; Romans 12:14–21; Ephesians 4:31–32; Colossians 3:12–14

The transformed heart Jesus describes becomes visible in the way we treat other people, especially the people who are hardest to love. In His teaching on retaliation and enemy-love, Jesus challenges the instinct to get even, keep score, return insult for insult, or love only the people who love us back.

Discussion Questions:

1. Where do you most often feel the gap between “looking okay” and actually being okay?

2. What would it look like this week to stop managing what Jesus wants to transform?

3. Is there a conversation, confession, boundary, act of forgiveness, or step of surrender Jesus may be inviting you into?
